I suggest that you watch these movies in broad daylight, as if you watch them at night, you can forget about sleeping altogether. Even waking up and going in to the kitchen for a glass of water will be a scary experience at night. See to it that you have somebody with you while you watch them! Watch at your own risk.

There are many ways in which one can rate horror movies. There are people called 'Film Critics', who somehow, even without having made a film themselves, are supposed to know more about them! I personally think that what makes a great horror movie is the surprise element, subtle creeping background horror, suspense, excellent sound effects and of course a great storyline which explores the primal fears of humanity. Here is my personal selection of the top ten best horror movies of all time. What appeals to me as a horror flick may not appeal to you as it's a matter of taste. Nevertheless, I can assure you that these ten movies won't disappoint you as horror flicks.

Best Horror Movies of All Time #1: The Exorcist
This movie directed by William Friedkin is based on the demonic possession of a girl and an exorcism performed by two priests to save her soul. It has all that you want in a good horror flick. The possession of an innocent girl by the devil himself has its share of irony and surprise. It's a must watch!

Best Horror Movies of All Time #2: The Shining
This Stanley Kubrick film is a psycho horror masterpiece. A writer (played by Jack Nicholson) spends time as a caretaker in a haunted hotel. Tormented by ghosts, he loses it and tries to kill his own wife and son. The very fact that Jack Nicholson stars in it, makes it a must watch!

The film directed by one of the greatest directors in Hollywood, Alfred Hitchcock is credited with being the first modern horror film, that went beyond conventional stereotypes! So, this is my personal list of the best horror movies of all time. Every one of them explores different themes and primal fears of the human mind. These may or may not be the best horror movies ever made. The only way to decide is to watch them! I dare you!
