Tips On Planning A Nursery For Your Child

For most parents who are expecting a new arrival, getting the nursery ready is a pleasant and exciting task. With the vast array of options you will find, however, a decision can become difficult when you must choose the furniture and the decor for the room. By planning things out in advance, your results will be achieved in less time and with a greater sense of satisfaction.

You may have some decorations saved from your own nursery or that you used for an older child. If so, inspect them prior to shopping. Put in writing what you have and what its design or color is. As an example, you might want to note that you have a balloon bouquet wall hanging in red, blue, and yellow. Compare your list of items desired to what you have and eliminate duplicates.

It can be helpful to decide on a theme for the nursery, and there are a great many from which to choose. Many designers make every item from a bedding collection to a toy box with the same pattern. You can select from themes that include pirates, animals, butterflies, and fairies. However, you do not have to make every item in the nursery from the same collection. You can mix in some solid colors as well to add more interest to the room.

The crib is typically the focal point of the nursery. When you are evaluating baby cribs, you might wish to consider those that can be changed into youth beds. This can sometimes make the crib more economical, since baby will soon be too old for it and need another bed anyway. Pay special attention to the mattress, making sure it does not leave gaps that could be hazardous to baby. If you have inherited an older crib, be sure it meets or exceeds safety recommendations, like the spacing between the bars.

Make sure that all fabric items purchased for the nursery are flame retardant. This can be a problem when you have inherited vintage items. In general, the recommended rule of thumb to follow is that if you are unsure, do not place the item in the nursery. The same holds true with sleepwear for the baby.

Window treatments that can be easily adjusted are good choices. There may be times when baby needs to sleep during the day, so being able to darken the room may help. On the other hand, you might want to let the sunshine in for play time or when bathing the baby. You may not need blackout drapes, but a shade or blinds that can be adjusted can be a handy feature. Make sure that any cords are well out of the reach of an infant or toddler.

Look for a changing table that is solidly built. It should have safety straps to be used to help prevent falls. Since babies often begin to turn over before parents are aware of the fact, the straps should always be used. In addition, never leave baby alone on it, even for a second. The wall behind the table might be a good place to hang your diaper stacker.

In no time at all, your baby will be needing a place to do homework, a loft bed, and maybe a game system. Time passes quickly, so you might want to place a rocking chair in the nursery so that visitors can rock the baby or just watch him sleep. You will likely be glad that you have one at some point during her infancy.

When all is said and done, there is really just one thing that is necessary for the nursery. A safe environment for your baby is the only aspect of the room that is absolutely critical. Everything else is optional, so you should feel free to create a nursery the way you want.
